Zithromax is in a class of medications called macrolide antibiotics.
Zithromax (azithromycin) is an oral drug used for mild or moderate infections caused by bacteria. It works against several different bacteria, sexually transmitted diseases (STD) especially chlamydia, bronchitis, pneumonia, streptococcus and hemophilus. These bacteria can infect the skin, nose, throat, and lungs. They can also be transmitted through sexual activity and cause infections in the genital area.
This drug is usually taken with or without food once a day for 1-5 days. The tablets should be taken with a full glass of water on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
This drug may also be used for other purposes.
The recommended Zithromax dosage for most types of common bacterial infections is 250 mg or 500 mg once daily for three to five days. For chronic or more serious infections, your healthcare provider may continue treatment for an extended period.
Side effectsZithromax side effects may include:
- stomach pain or upset;
- diarrhea;
- vomiting;
- mild skin rash;
- severe skin rash;
- hoarseness;
- hives;
- itching;
- difficulty breathing or swallowing.
